Use Adjective Clause Connector/Subjects Correctly
Gunakan Secara Tepat Kata Penghubung Klausa Ajektif yang Berfungsi Ganda Sebagai Subjek
Dalam Kunci 11 kita sudah melihat bahwa adjective caluse connector digunakan untuk menjelaskan kata benda (noun). Dalam kunci 12 ini, kita akan melihat bahwa dalam beberapa kasus adjective clause connector tidak hanya sebagai penghubung; adjective clause connector juga bisa menjadi subjek klausa pada waktu yang sama. Perhatikan kalimat berikut.

  1. The woman is filling the glass that is on the table
    (Wanita itu sedang mengisi gelas yang di atas meja itu)
  2. The glass that is on the table contains milk.
    (Gelas yang diatas di meja itu berisi susu)
* Adjective Clause

Dalam contoh No.1 ada dua klausa: woman adalah subjek dari kata kerja is filling, dan that adalah subjek dari verb is. Kedua klausa bergabung dengan konektor that. Perhatikan bahwa dalam contoh ini kata that memiliki dua fungsi sekaligus: itu adalah subjek dari kata kerja is, dan sebagai konektor yang menghubungkan dua klausa. Kalimat "that is on the table" adalah adjective clause yang menggambarkan kata benda glass.
Dalam contoh No.2, juga ada dua klausa: glass adalah subjek dari kata kerja contains, dan that adalah subjek dari kata kerja is. Dalam contoh ini that juga memiliki dua fungsi: sebagai subjek dari verb is dan jadi konektor yang menghubungkan dua klausa. Kalimat "that is on the table" adalah adjective clause yang menggambarkan kata benda glass.

Perhatikan contoh berikut yang menunjukkan bagaimana pola kalimat ini bisa diujikan dalam soal Structur pada tes TOEFL.
______ is on the table has four sections.
(A) The notebook
(B) The notebook which
(C) Because the notebook
(D) In the notebook

Dalam contoh ini Anda dapat melihat bahwa kalimat ini memiliki dua kata kerja, is dan has, dan masing-masing membutuhkan subjek. Anda tahu table bukanlah subject karena mengikuti preposisi on; table adalah objek dari preposisi. Satu-satunya jawaban yang memiliki dua subjek adalah (B), sehingga jawaban (B) adalah jawaban yang benar. Kalimat yang benar harus mengatakan: The notebook which is on the table has four sections (Buku catatan yang di atas meja itu mempunyai empat bab). Dalam kalimat ini, notebook adalah subjek dari kata kerja has, dan which merupakan subjek dari kata kerja is. Which juga merupakan konektor yang menghubungkan dua klausa.
