Be Careful of Past Participles
Hati-hati Terhadap Past Participle
Past participle adalah bentuk kata kerja yang muncul/didahului be (am, is, are, was, were) dan have (have, has, had). Biasanya, pembentukannya diakhiri -ed (offered, listed, suspected, etc.)
A. Verb
The family has purchased a television. (Keluarga itu telah membeli sebuah televisi)
The poem was written by Paul. (Puisi itu telah ditulis oleh Paul)
Pada kalimat pertama bentuk past participle "purchased" merupakan bagian dari kata kerja karena di dahului oleh have (has). Sementara yang kedua, past participle "written" juga merupakan bagian dari kata kerja karena di dahului oleh be (was).
B. Adjective
Past participle dapat menjadi kata sifat apabila tidak disertai/didahului bentuk be atau have.
The television purchased yesterday was expensive. (Televisi yang dibeli kemarin mahal)
The poem written by Paul appeared in the magazine.

The bread ______ baked this morning smelled delicious.
(A) has
(B) was
(C) it
(D) just

The bread just baked this morning smelled delicious. (Roti yang dibakar pagi ini tercium nikmat)

RUMUS KUNCI 5

  1. She painted this picture. (Dia telah melukis gambar ini)
  2. She has painted this picture. (Dia telah melukis gambar ini)
  3. The picture painted by Karen is now in a museum.
